Man arrested in relation to crossbow incident at The Oval

A 35-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted grievous bodily harm (GBH) following Thursday’s incident at The Oval when a crossbow bolt was fired into the ground during the County Championship match between Surrey and Middlesex.

The man was arrested on Saturday morning after attending a South London police station. He has been bailed to a date in late September pending further enquiries.

The incident happened at 4.20pm, during the 69th over of Middlesex’s second innings, when players alerted the umpires after the bolt landed about 10 yards from the pitch. The players quickly left the field, armed police were called to the ground and a controlled evacuation took place.

Detective Constable Dominic Landragin of Lambeth CID said: “There were significant crowds watching the match and it is likely that a number of those present will have footage of the incident that could assist in our investigation.

“Although nobody was injured, this was a reckless action taken with no regard for the safety and well-being of the spectators or the players. It is important that we trace those responsible and I urge anyone who has footage of the incident to get in touch as soon as possible.”
